Welcome to the Future

Spring is nearly here… a time of rebirth… a time when Realtors remind you to set your clocks ahead and offer generic home maintenance tips beneath a cheery stock photo.

Here’s something gleaned from a real life experience…

It had been more than a decade since I last bought a lawn-mower. Times have changed! The store was stocked with electric machines. Sure, there were a few gas powered jobs way down at the end, but the majority of the gleaming offerings required no fuel… nor even an extension cord. Most are powered by removable rechargeable batteries. This evolution happened recently. Consumer preferences shifted; manufacturers stepped up to meet the demand. I’d suddenly arrived in the future.

With a little help from online reviews (obtained from a powerful communication computer that I carry around in my pocket) I chose a mower, paid, and loaded it into the back of our old gas-guzzling pickup. I hate to even include this automotive relic in a story about progress, but I needed a way to transport the electric mower. I lifted with my legs, like they tell you, and discovered this thing was as light as a feather. Consumer benefit! Lighter means easier to load, transport and maneuver around the yard!

On the drive home I stopped twice to fill the truck with gas and pondered what other benefits the new electric mower was likely to bestow. Later, I asked a chatbot about the virtues of electric mowers. Here is what that entity had to say:

Electric mowers are much quieter than their gasoline-powered counterparts. Because electric mowers don’t need to be refueled, they are also much easier to maintain. You don’t need to worry about oil changes or spark plug replacements.

Electric mowers are much better for the environment than gasoline mowers. They generate no emissions and use far less energy than their counterparts. This means that electric mowers can help reduce your overall carbon footprint.

Finally, electric mowers are more affordable to operate and maintain, making them a great choice for homeowners who want to save money on lawn care.

The upfront cost is comparable to a gas mower, but electric mowers are considerably cheaper over time. Common run-time on a single charge is just under one hour. One last benefit – there is NO cord to pull to start an electric mower. Maybe ChatGPT didn’t think that was worth mentioning, but humans who have started a mower with a cord just might.

I am told a disadvantage is less torque. This could present an issue trying to mow tall grass.

So far I found the performance to be terrific. The electric mower was easy to start, easy to maneuver and afterward the lawn was worthy of a stock photo.

Hope you have a terrific Spring. And don’t forget to set your clocks forward when you go to bed on this coming Saturday! 🙂
