Gray Interior: Pros and Cons

There was a time when sponge-painted red accent walls were ubiquitous. Granite counters were king. Then came a shift: gray and white. Suddenly flippers started going with this scheme. It’s clean. It’s neutral. It photographs well. It is TRENDY! But do you want to live there?  I break down the pros and cons...

The Pros

Clean and Fresh Gray and white interiors look clean. And that is great, especially when it comes time to sell. Buyers walk in and see a blank canvas. There are no shocking teal walls or dark wood trim issues circa 1980.

Photographs Well Real estate photography loves these tones. Lighting bounces around. That white trim pops with strong definition. Your listing looks like a Pinterest board

Easy to accessorize A white-and-gray room is the Little Black Dress of interiors. Throw a splash of color in a pillow, a plant, or an art piece and it jumps out in a good way. You can easily swap out accessories seasonally without repainting anything. Autumn colors, spring colors… easy.

Feels larger Lighter colors tend to have the effect of opening up a space.

The Cons

It’s pretty common I see the new listings every day. The scheme is everywhere. There is an opportunity to stand out if you go with something a little different.

It can feel sterile Too much gray and white, especially without warmth or texture, starts to feel like you live in an office. There’s a fine line between “elegantly neutral” and “clinical.”

It can easily lack personality I feel like your home should reflect the people inside it. If you aren’t a bit deliberate, gray and white may not do that. I think you can express yourself in a home like this, but it might take a bit more than color pops.

Hard to maintain that spotless look The Gray and white looks does look clean, but after awhile it doesn’t.  This is probably true of warmer color palates, but I certainly notice this on prelisting appointments.

In conclusion, your gray and white house is totally okay, but I might like to see more listings hit the market that reflect the diversity that exists in humanity. We don’t all have to live in gray and white homes.
